Facebook privacy settlement 2025 : If you used Facebook between May 2007 and December 2022, you could soon receive a payout from a major privacy settlement. Meta, Facebook’s parent company, agreed to pay $725 million to settle allegations that it mishandled user data through wrongful sharing practices. This landmark settlement is now disbursing payments to over 19 million eligible Americans starting September 2025.
Background of the Settlement

The settlement stems from the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal, which revealed in 2018 that Facebook had allowed the personal data of up to 87 million users to be accessed without their consent. The data was reportedly used for political advertising during the 2016 U.S. elections. Following years of litigation and Facebook denying wrongdoing, Meta agreed in 2023 to resolve the case with a $725 million settlement—the largest privacy class-action settlement in U.S. history.
Who is Eligible?
Anyone in the United States who had an active Facebook account anytime from May 24, 2007, to December 22, 2022, could file a claim. Millions did, with over 19 million valid claims approved after the submission deadline in August 2023. Even users who had deleted their accounts during that period are eligible.
How is the Payment Calculated?
The payout is not evenly distributed but based on how long each person actively used Facebook during the covered timeframe. Each month of account usage counts as one “point.” For example, if you had a Facebook account for 60 months (five years), you’d receive 60 allocation points. Your final payment depends on your share of the total points accumulated by all claimants.
Legal fees and costs are deducted from the total settlement, with about $180 million going to attorneys and roughly $120,000 shared among eight lead plaintiffs.
How Much Will Users Receive?
Although the total settlement amount is large, individual payouts are expected to be modest due to the high number of claimants. Estimates suggest the median payout will be around $25 to $30, with some long-term users receiving slightly more. This range was confirmed during hearings in 2023 and reflects the distribution after legal and administrative fees.
When and How Will Payments Be Sent?
Payments began in early September 2025 and will continue to be sent out in batches over the next 10 weeks. Claimants will receive email notifications from “Facebook User Privacy Settlement Administrator” a few days before payment disbursement. Most users chose to receive funds through online payment platforms like PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle, while others opted for prepaid Mastercards, direct deposit, or paper checks.
Importantly, no additional action or information is needed from users who successfully filed claims and provided payment details.
Why This Settlement Matters
Beyond the monetary payout, this settlement is significant because it holds a major
tech company accountable for privacy breaches affecting millions of users over many years.
It also serves as a warning to companies about respecting user data and upholding privacy rights.
Although the payouts are relatively small, the case marks an important milestone
in the ongoing fight for digital privacy and corporate responsibility.
